Alexis and I had breakfast and let the kids sleep in. However, at 11am when we went to wake them, they both said they were not feeling well. Shortly thereafter, Sasha bounded out of bed, not wanting to miss any of the action. Sam chose to stay under the covers. 

We headed out to the Contemporary Art Museum, which despite the guide’s indications was closed. We then went to the Mario Vargas Llosa museum which didn’t have tours until 2:30pm…. So, we went for a sure thing and hit the covered market. We perused the stands and then Alexis and I indulged in delicious Chicharron and Lechon (pork) sandwiches (see my enjoyment in Alexis’ pictures below) while Sasha had a fruit smoothie. 

Sam was still down for the count so we enjoyed the celebrations in the main plaza and walked around town soaking in the festive ambiance of Arequipa’s 476 year anniversary. We all agreed that of the the towns we have visited, Arquipa is the one in which we could easily imagine living: architecturally beautiful, culturally interesting, great food, nice people and fabulous climate (oh, and best pisco sours we have had so far)… What more can one ask for?

Sam ne se sent pas bien donc nous allons au Musée d’art moderne avec Sasha… Mais il est fermé (malgré les indications du guide). Nous poursuivons sur le musée Vargas Llosa mais la prochaine visite est à. 14h:30 et dure 2h, un peu long pour une ado de 13 ans. Pas de chance. Nous nous rabattons sur le grand marché couvert de la ville, toujours passionnant à découvrir. 

Nous y déjeunons tellement les sandwichs sont appétissants: lechon (porcs en tranche) et chicharrones dans des pains ronds, un régal, la preuve en images:

Aujourd’hui la ville fête ses 476 ans, toutes les rues sont bloquées autour de la plaza de armas et bien sûr les défilés sont de rigueur, comme partout où nous passons. Arequipa est vraiment une ville qui vaut le détour pour la beauté de son architecture (il faut aimer le style colonial bien sûr), sa douceur de vivre (le temps est parfait tout le temps – l’altitude est aussi plus basse à 2335 mètres), le cadre magique (entourée de volcans et montagnes), et la gentillesse de ses habitants.
